King Faisal Prize Takes Center Stage in MSU’s 58th Foundation Day Celebrations

The return of the King Faisal Prize was the highlight in this year’s celebrations, since the father of the Mindanao State University, the late Senator Domocao Alonto was a recipient of the said award. His son, Ambassador Adnan V. Alonto came home to accompany the guest speaker of the 58th Foundation Day celebrations, the Secretary General of the King Faisal Prize, His Excellency, Dr. Abdulaziz Alsebail. The return of the said prize highlighted the celebration, as did the King Faisal Prize’s special gift to the present MSU System President Habib W. Macaayong, DPA. The foundation day program was held on September 1, 2019 at the Dimaporo Gymnasium after the traditional morning parade of the university’s officials, faculty, students, and staff. Dr. Macaayong welcomed the participants with his speech which placed emphasis on the history of the MSU, particularly its record triumph over the aftermath of the Marawi siege and the prize which is priceless to the people of the Lake. Sen. Domocao Alonto’s vision and efforts led to the creation of the Mindanao State University. The honor of giving the introduction of the guest speaker was given to the Ambassador of the Philippines to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Atty. Adnan Alonto.

Dr. Abdulaziz Alsebail enthralled the audience with his speech, In his address to the university officials and the constituents present in the assembly, he exhorted the University to carry on with the task of improving not only the quality of learning but also the quality of life of the members of the community through humility, volunteerism, and service to humanity.

“Remember that you will be remembered by what you contribute in the society, not by your degree… Never think that you know everything,” said by His Excellency.

To show the University’s appreciation, a token of appreciation, carried by chosen members of the Darangen Dance Troupe with musical accompaniment from the Sining Kambayoka Ensemble was given to Dr. Alsebail by University officials led by President Macaayong. As a surprise, Dr. Alsebail brought with him the seal of the King Faisal Prize as a gift to the MSUS President Habib W. Macaayong, DPA.

The celebration’s other distinguished guests were Madame Atty. Jo Ernest Castro-Alonto, wife of Ambassador Alonto, Bae Norhata Alonto, wife of the late MinDA Secretary Abulkhayr Alonto, Vice Governor Mohammad Khalid “Mujam” Raki-in Adiong of Lanao del Sur who represented the Governor Mamintal Alonto Adiong, Sr., 82IB Commander Col. Rafman Altre who represented General Romeo S. Brawner, Jr., and former Vice President Dr. Rufino Ignacio.

Another notable highlight of the event was the cultural fashion showcase. This was facilitated by Dean Minombao R. Mayo, J.D., Ph.D, of the Graduate School. Most of the college deans wore and modeled their cultural attire to the delight of the audience. A Pagana Meranaw prepared by the Pagana Meranaw Committee headed by Supt. Cairani Dia Gandamra was then shared by the University officials, unit heads and guests at the Convention Center.

The overall chairperson of the 58th Foundation Day Celebrations was the Vice President for Admin and Finance, Atty. Jamaloden A. Basar. The highlights of the Foundation Day celebration were the Literary Competitions, Musical Contest, Dance Extravaganza, Intramural Games, and Kalilang Festival organized by Director Edenairah Esmail, of MSU-University Training Center, (UTC).
