Asher Shimrone L. Tanzo from the College of Engineering romped away with the first prize of the 2019 Poster-Making Contest with the theme, “MSU at 58: Transcending Peace and Development Efforts through Quality Education,” on August 16, 2019 at the University Library, MSU-Main Campus, Marawi City. His winning artwork was the featured cover design of this year’s founding anniversary souvenir program. Likewise, he was given a copy which was personally signed by His Excellency Dr. Abdulazis Alsebail, Secretary-General of King Faisal Prize and Guest of Honor during the culmination of the MSU Foundation Day. He also received PhP3,000 cash award, a medal, and a Certificate of Recognition.
According to Tanzo, art is not just a hobby; it plays an essential role in his life. “As an engineering student, we ought to learn how to draw, sketch, or anything to do with our degree, but being an artist is a different thing, “ he said.
“It gives me the kind of joy I only feel by just looking at my masterpieces. If life is an art, I would say that Art has been my entire life,” he added. It is also worth noting that last year’s Grand Winner was also from the College of Engineering.
The second prize went to Mohammad Ali D. Diangca of the College of Agriculture. He received PhP2,000 cash prize. Efren B. Herrera of the College of Social Sciences and Humanities won the third prize and received PhP1,500 cash prize.
Two special awards were also given to some contestants whose artworks emerged during the contest. The Artists’ Choice Award was given to Sittie Hayah A. Amer of the College of Engineering. Nabel A. Abdulcader of the College of Agriculture, Mark Ronald Paulican of the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, and Farhan Edres of the College of Hotel and Restaurant Management copped the People’s Choice Award. The special awards winners were selected based on the number of votes they gained during the week-long artworks display held at the University Library headed by Director Elin Anisha C. Guro. She was also this year’s Poster-making Contest Committee chairperson.
The winners of the three major awards were determined by a panel of judges headed by Director Linang Cabugatan of Aga Khan Museum and Natural Science Museum.
The support of some University officials stimulated the successful conduct of the contest as well. Among them are Vice President Atty. Jamaloden A. Basar for Administration and Finance, Vice Chancellor Atty. Saaduddin M. Alauya Jr. for Administration and Finance, and OICAssistant Vice President Rodrigo S. Baid, MSCE for Planning and Development.
The foundation day souvenir program poster-making contest plays an integral part in the celebration of the University Founding Anniversary. It is primarily designed not only to maximize student participation but also to harness their creativity and innovative patronage as means of empowering MSUans. This activity portrays their perceptions in addressing different concerns of the University towards the end of attaining the vision of being a world class University.
