The Camaraderie and Alumni Day 2019 held last August 31, 2019 is noteworthy for having achieved more than the desired Kanggiginawai, Kakakhriala and Kasunur (3Ks) among the alumni of the Mindanao State University System. It included reminiscences of past students’ experiences, renewing old acquaintances, renewing that unique MSU alumni bond and refreshing that lofty aspiration as partners of the University. More than 250 registered alumni came from various places in Mindanao and as far as Metro Manila represented by Alumni Regent Roberto “Bobby” N. Lim. The attendees enjoyed the activities prepared by the Committee on Alumni Participation during the 58th founding anniversary of their alma mater.
The event started with a 30-minute zumba session led by Prof. Hendely A. Adlawan, Dean, College of Sports, Physical Education and Recreation. It was followed by a walkathon dubbed as the “Alumni Peace Walk” down the old memory lane fronting the old University Cafeteria and the Library, now fronting the Dr. Isidro Hall going to the former MSU Summit Inn and the Office of the President, now the Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs and the College of Hotel and Restaurant Management and passing the now Presidential House of the University. The said peace walk was headed by 1966 alumnus Datumanong A. Sarangani. The Peace Walk ended at the Buwakan Park of the present University Library which provided a panoramic view of the MSU Golf Course and the unforgettable “Sleeping Lady” mountain across Lake Lanao, where the program was held. There were exchange of song renditions and the unguarded reminiscing of MSU students’ multi-faceted experiences which the moment spontaneously evoked.
There were presentations from the MSU Alumni Association, Cagayan de Oro Chapter led by its present president, Engr Julius Maquiling together with immediate past president Cleveo Bonifacio Alaba, former Alumni Regent Samuel Sabenecio, Chapter BOD member, Engr. David Tauli and a 1996 alumna, Ms. Rubina Buhos-Kwan. The alumni members of MSU Darangan Cultural Troupe led by its founding dancer-trainor Prof. Henrietta Ele also played their part with guests including the attending alumni representing the Datu Mamintal Adiong Memorial High School. Individual alumni coming from the cities of Marawi and Iligan and the provinces of Lanao del Sur and Norte also presented their respective performances. There was also a delegation from MSUAA-Maguindanao chapter.
A number of alumni also participated in the various parlor games initiated by Dr. Minerva-Saminah M. Naga and Director Sarifa Sofia A Macarambon-Ali under the cool shady trees of the MSU golf course. The said activities served to rekindle the spirit of alumni unity and team building which are most needed towards success and victory.
The affair ended with the visit of alumni coming from MSUAA-Cagayan to the historic Ground Zero area of Marawi City, where the ruins of the siege are located.
The Chairperson of the Committee on Alumni Participation, Director Hadja Hanimah S. Lao expressed her deep appreciation to all university officials and other stakeholders who helped make the said affair extra meaningful and successful, especially the charismatic overall chairman of the Steering Committee, VP Jamaloden Basar.
