MSU Receives CHED Awards
The Mindanao State University (MSU) received a Commission on Higher Education (CHED) Award of Recognition and Commendation last December 17, 2018 at the Astoria Plaza, Ortigas, Pasig City from Hon. J. Prospero E. De Vera III, DPA, CHED Chairman, with the active facilitation and coordination of Atty. Lily Freida M. Milla, CESO IV, Director III, International Affairs Staff (IAS) of CHED.
The first CHED award is for MSU Main Campus in Marawi in recognition of the University’s contribution towards raising ASEAN awareness and fostering the ASEAN Identity and Spirit among the Filipino Youth through organizing activities in commemoration of ASEAN’s 51st Founding Anniversary in August 2018.
The other CHED Award is for MSU-IIT in Iligan City for the invaluable contribution to the ASEAN University Network (AUN)/Southeast Asian Engineering Education Development Network.
For the first time, CHED conferred seven (7) Awards of Recognition and Commendation in the following categories:
1.) ASEAN University Network (AUN) and AUN/Southeast Asian Engineering Education Network (SEED-Net)
2.) AIMS Program stands for ASEAN International Mobility for Students (AIMS) programme, formally known as M-I-T, which aims to create a vibrant student mobility programme for citizens of all SEAMEO member countries. It has a long history, emerging from the Malaysia-Indonesia-Thailand (M-I-T) Student Mobility Pilot Project which was initiated in 2009 as collaboration between the governments of the three countries and SEAMEO RIHED.
3.) UMAP Program which stands for the University Mobility in Asia and the Pacific is an association of government and non-government representatives of the higher education sector in the Asia-Pacific region. This was founded in 1991 and comprises 35 countries/territories with over 570 participating universities. Its aim is for the university students as well as faculty and administrative staff to achieve better understanding of the cultural, economic and social systems and backgrounds of other countries by promoting mobility of university students and staff.
4.) UK-PH Transnational Education Program aka “TNE10”
5.) Training on the Internationalization of Philippine Higher Education aka “Canada 15”
6.) Hosting of ASEAN-Related Activities

Due to previous urgent hectic schedules, Hon. Habib W. Macaayong, the President of MSU System, instead sent Dr. Alma E. Berowa, the Vice President for Academic Affairs of MSU System, and Dr. Juliet T. Mendoza, the Presidential Assistant for International Linkaging, Office of the President in MSU Marawi Campus and Senior Faculty of the Department of International Relations of KFCIAAS received the awards for the two (2) campuses of MSU.
The said rare occasion and first of a kind initiated by CHED, was well attended by Presidents, Vice Presidents, and International Linkaging officials of State Universities and Colleges (SUCs) in the entire Philippines.
MSU responded Memorandum Circular dated July 6, 2018 for the academic sector’s collective effort to participate in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) community-building and to foster greater awareness in ASEAN as a multi-purpose regional organization.
The Philippines was the host for 50th Founding Anniversary of ASEAN, and Singapore is 2018 host of the 51st Celebration with the themes: “Partnering for change, engaging the World” and “Resilient and Innovative“ respectively.
MSU Marawi has conducted series of activities in celebration of the 51st Founding Anniversary of ASEAN during the 57th Foundation Day of MSU on September 1, 2018. Program of activities included every Monday Flag Raising ceremonies information drive about ASEAN; Display of ASEAN Flags; Singing of ASEAN Hymns; On-the-Air Radio Program every Monday 9:30 – 10:30 AM and Wednesday 10:30 – 11:30 AM at the University FM Radio Station 94.1 MHz about ASEAN; Distribution of ASEAN materials from Philippine Information Agency (PIA); Search for Best in ASEAN National Costume; Seminar on the Heraldic Code of the Philippines/RA No. 8491; Public Diplomacy Forum on ASEAN and the Role of ASEAN in Addressing Concerns in the South China Sea (SCS) with the Maritime and Ocean Affairs Office (MOAO) of the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) in Pasay City as partner; ASEAN University Quiz Show, and ASEAN Cuisine Exhibit.
The said series of activities were successfully and sustainably conducted with the full support of Hon. Habib W. Macaayong, DPA, the President of MSU System and concerned system and campus supportive officials, to wit: Prof. Rasid M. Paca, the Vice President for Planning and Development of MSU System was Chairman of the Steering Committee of the 57th Foundation Day; Dr. Cesar A. Dela Seña, the Vice Chancellor for Research and Extension (OVCRE) was the Chairman of the ASEAN Activities Committee; All Colleges, semi-academic and administrative units, faculty, staff, the Supreme Student Government (SSG) and students of the University.
Dr. Juliet T. Mendoza, the Presidential Assistant for International Linkaging of the Office of the President, served as the ASEAN activities facilitator and coordinator in the MSU Main Campus.#
